  • How to pee with a foreskin?

My son is 3 years old, intact and has been potty trained for about 8 months now. The problem is, when he pees it goes everywhere! I wish I could help teach him the art to peeing with a foreskin but I can not as I lost mine on day 1.

We have never retracted his foreskin and is seems to still be attached to his gland in most places (totally normal). At first I noticed that the extra foreskin at the tip could be squished over to one side making the pee go almost any direction except where he was pointing it. I found gently pulling it strait before peeing would help, but not always.

Sometimes when he pees his foreskin balloons out (normal I think) and the hole in the tip of the foreskin seems to be smaller. Picture a water balloon with a pin hole in it. When this happens the direction of the stream can be anywhere, even close to 180 degrees from the aim. Yes he has peed in his own face, my face, and almost everywhere else too!

Sometimes I consider retracting his foreskin just enough to make sure the urethra has a clear path, but don't want to cause him any pain or damage, so I never have. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to help my son and minimize the pee on my bathroom floor?

Sounds like he's standing. Have him sit for now.

Sometimes children play or pull on their foreskin without even noticing - like scratching an itch. This is part of the natural detaching of the foreskin from the glans, and/or resolving phimosis. Is he ever told not to do this, or not given the opportunity to do it (e.g. wears clothes 24/7)? It may be something as simple as that to let it resolve itself.

Thanks for the responses. I usually do have him sit down especially at home, but still about 25% of the time he manages to pee between the seat and the rim getting the back of his pants, the floor, the wall, or what ever is in the way. I have been instructing him to sit and aim it straight down, but still the stream in totally unpredictable. It nice to be able to stand at public toilets, but it usually results in a mess.

We don't restrict him from 'playing' and in the summer there is a far amount of nudity. My thought it this will eventually normalize once the foreskin detaches a little from the tip.

My son is intact but hasn't had this issue. You might consider phimosis creams or alternate treatments. Unfortunately finding a doctor that really knows about foreskin issue probably wont be easy and most would say it's time to cut.

You could try showing him how to start to retract, but make sure to tell him if it hurts AT ALL to STOP!

If he's 3 years old don't attempt to retract. That's far too young. Most boy's foreskins don't even begin to retract until at least age 5. Attempting to retract his foreskin now could easily forcibly separate the adhesions connecting his foreskin to his glans. This will lead to small wounds on which he will continually urinate, causing infection. Let his foreskin be, and stick with sitting and aiming. He'll probably grow out of it, and if he doesn't, there are some phimosis spacers available online to help widen his foreskin opening. You've done the right thing by being gentle with your son so far.

It's just a matter of the foreskin opening not being lined up with the urinary opening. I've noticed myself that when I have coverage just over the tip of my glans (so far only when it's cold), the urine swirls around out the opening of the foreskin and sprays all over. As I grow overhang, I expect this to change slightly - I suppose the water pressure would be lower by the time it reaches the tip.

For your kid, the problem will likely resolve itself as he grows or learns to control it. Think of it as just a phase.

At his age, he may not be tall enough or have enough foresight to control the direction of the flow into the bowl. Just have him sit on the toilet and hold his penis down, until he can control the direction of flow while standing. I'm sure his mother would appreciate it.

My youngest boy had this problem for a while, he solved it by pulling the tip of the foreskin forward first like stretching it out in front - no retraction. He can then pee though his foreskin with no mess.

My son almost 6 now just lets it fly! Good stream no mess. When we was potty trained he would sit. The training seat had a cup in the front to catch it if he didn't aim it down.
